When people are watching gangster films, they enjoy how cool those gangsters are when they are fighting and killing people instead of paying attention to the cruelty of the violent action. People’s cognition of those films are entertainment products, which leads to the desensitization of violence. The audience is part of game because of the unreal feeling. When designing clothes for gangsters, I am inspired by suits, fur and jewelry the gangsters wore. I chose some materials which are not conventional fabric to express an unrealistic feeling. I used fox toys, wigs and car washing gloves to create the special “gangster fur” creating my faux world for each look. For example, the hair on the suit might come from every victim this gangster murdered. I also designed jewelry for the gang leader. I found that rings are a symbol of power. I used candy which will melt really fast as the jewels to express the sweetness of power and how transient it is.
This vending coat is made with car washing gloves and is designed for selling illegal goods, such as restricted comic books. There are two pockets which can be turned over on the each side so the seller wearing the coat can hide products from police. The interior then looks like lining for warmth.
The pictures from the comic book were drawn from some famous gangster films. I picked violent scenes and replaced the blood with shinny star-shaped stickers to express what an audience sees when they are watching.
